Shut off the water.
A burst pipe will send water flooding into your home. Locate the main water supply and shut it off to stop the flow of water, preventing additional damage. Leave the faucets on to fully drain the pipe and relieve any remaining pressure, and flush all toilets. Depending on where the leak is, you may also need to shut off the electricity.
Repair the pipe.
Call a plumber to make sure the pipe is repaired quickly and correctly. Attempting to repair the pipe yourself may cause further damage, so it’s best to rely on the experts.
Get rid of the water.
The longer water stays in your home, the more potential there is for damage. Remove as much standing water as possible with a wet/dry vacuum, move waterlogged items to a warm, dry place, and set up fans or a dehumidifier in the area. Make sure the entire area is fully dry to avoid future issues with mold and mildew. For professional help, call SERVPRO of Benicia/ Martinez/ Southeast Vallejo 925/372-7234
Common causes of water damage

Leaks in the Plumbing Systems
A leak at any point in the plumbing system is the commonest cause of water damage. It is common for leaks to occur when pipes rust resulting in corrosion. Other causes of water leaks include high water pressures, weak pipe joints, extreme temperatures, and broken water connectors. Your system could have been subject to natural disasters. Plumbing issues should be taken care of right away.
Clogged Gutters
The most typical culprits that clog include tree leaves, weeds, ice, and sludge. Most people are not keen on cleaning their gutters, and therefore dirt accumulates and clogs the drains.
When the gutters clog, water pools in the area of blockage, and the excess water starts to overflow near the structures of the house, damaging them. This water may also collect in the basement of your home with mold proliferation and a nasty stench.

Three categories of water
6/2/2022 (Permalink)
Clean water damage is also referred to as category 1 water damage because it consists of usually sewage free and toxin-free water. This damage is typically caused by plumbing fixtures that control the flow and access to clean water, like a faucet or a water heater.
Gray water damage, or category 2 water damage, is caused when an appliance like a sump pump, toilet, or washing machine backs up and overflows. The water isn’t clean because it can contain soap, disinfectants, or other chemicals, but it isn’t likely to be immediately harmful to humans.
Black water damage, or category 3 water damage, can result from the wastewater lines or septic lines backing up. The water contains components that can create immediate risks, so calling in an experienced restoration team is necessary to clean up and sanitize as soon as possible. Black water damage can also include sewage, rising floodwater, seawater, river water, and contaminated groundwater.

When it comes to dealing with plumbing emergencies, knowing what to do and responding quickly can end up saving you hundreds (or possibly even thousands) of dollars in damage repairs. If a pipe in your home breaks or bursts, you’re likely going to need to call in a professional to do the actual repairs.
SERVPRO of Benicia/ Martinez/Southeast Vallejo is that professional. However, there are things you can do that can prevent the damage from becoming worse while you’re waiting for them to arrive.
As soon as you realize that you have a damaged pipe, follow the steps below.
Turning off the water is number one!
Before doing anything else, it’s important to promptly shut off your home’s main water supply. If you’re unsure of where the shut off valve is located, take some time to find it now, as opposed to waiting until you’re in a situation where you need to access it, and don’t know where to even begin looking. If you live in an apartment or another building type where you don’t have control over the water, immediately contact your landlord.

Three basic categories of water damage
1/8/2021 (Permalink)
There are three basic categories of water damage, based on the level of contamination.
Category 1 Water - Refers to a source of water that does not pose substantial threat to humans and classified as "clean water". Examples are broken water supply lines, tub or sink overflows or appliance malfunctions that involves water supply lines.
Category 2 Water - Refers to a source of water that contains a significant degree of chemical, biological or physical contaminants and causes discomfort or sickness when consumed or even exposed to. Known as "grey water". This type carries microorganisms and nutrients of micro-organisms. Examples are toilet bowls with urine (no feces), sump pump failures, seepage due to hydrostatic failure and water discharge from dishwashers or washing machines.
Category 3 Water - Known as "black water" and is grossly unsanitary. This water contains unsanitary agents, harmful bacteria and fungi, causing severe discomfort or sickness. Type 3 category are contaminated water sources that affect the indoor environment. This category includes water sources from sewage, seawater, rising water from rivers or streams, storm surge, ground surface water or standing water.
Category 2 Water or Grey Water that is not promptly removed from the structure and or have remained stagnant may be re classified as Category 3 Water. Toilet back flows that originates from beyond the toilet trap is considered black water contamination regardless of visible content or color.

Classes of Water
1/8/2021 (Permalink)
Class of water damage is determined by the probable rate of evaporation based on the type of materials affected, or wet, in the room or space that was flooded. Determining the class of water damage is an important first step and will determine the amount and type of equipment utilized to dry-down the structure.
Class 1 - Slow Rate of Evaporation. Affects only a portion of a room. Materials have a low permeance/porosity. Minimum moisture is absorbed by the materials.
Class 2 - Fast Rate of Evaporation. Water affects the entire room of carpet and cushion. May have wicked up the walls, but not more than 24 inches
Class 3 - Fastest Rate of Evaporation. Water generally comes from overhead, affecting the entire area, walls, ceilings, insulation, carpet, cushion, etc.
Class 4 - Specialty Drying Situations. Involves materials with an exceptionally low permeance/porosity, such as hardwood floors, concrete, crawlspaces, gypcrete, plaster, etc.

Signs you might have a water leak.
Leaky pipes can cause quite a stress in your home or business! Some leaks are undetectable until the damage has already been done.
Some things to look out for when you think there could be a leak in your home are the following:
Mold: Mold thrives on moist & dark areas; a leaky pipe leak is a common cause of mold growth.
Damaged Walls: When drywall is exposed to water it will begin to bubble, causing your wall, paint or wallpaper to warp, chip or break into pieces. You may also see discoloration.
Damaged Flooring: Particularly if the pipe directly underneath the floor is leaking, you’ll notice your floor beginning to buckle or crack. Hardwood floors may ow
Ceiling Stains: Upper level pipes may expose signs of leakage through the ceiling. Brown or dark ceiling stains tend to appear if water is leaking through to the lower level.
Musty Smell: With water accumulation comes that earthy pungent smell. If a hidden water leak is left unattended this can build up quickly.
If you happen to notice one or more signs from the above you most likely have an issue. Our Professional Technicians are available 24/7 to help you get your home or business back in order.

Air Movers
1/23/2020 (Permalink)
Centrifugal & Axial air movers.
CENTRIFUGAL AIR MOVERS
Centrifugal air movers are often referred to as blowers. They enhance an incoming airstream by use of a fan wheel. They create a high-pressure airflow by leading the stream of air through a series of tubes and ducts. You receive a steadier flow of air when you choose a centrifugal air mover.
You typically find centrifugal fans in situations that require high pressure drying applications. The one drawback of choosing centrifugal fans is that they are too powerful and high-pressured for use in areas that require more modulated flow.
Think about spaces where computers need cooling or spaces where humans need airflow for comfort. In these situations, a centrifugal fan may be too much.
AXIAL AIR MOVERS
Axial air movers are the most common “fan”. The first electric fans were axial designs based on the look and effect of windmills. They are called axial air movers because of the direction the airflow they create moves. Blades move around an axis, and the air moves out of the fan in the same direction.
Air volume from an axial air mover is high, while the pressure is low. Each axial air mover requires little in the way of power input, so they are highly energy efficient.
Axial air movers are often used in general-purpose use given their high-volume, low-pressure nature. This makes them great for providing comfort in workspaces and for cooling technology in tight spaces, such as servers or computers. Axial air movers are not as adept at drying or air conditioning given their low pressure, so they find less use in large water damage restoration projects.
SERVPRO of Benicia/Martinez/Southeast Vallejo may use one type of air mover on a drying job or a combination depending on the situation.
Prepare your home for Rain
10/3/2019 (Permalink)
The time to prepare your home for the rainy season is before the rains hit!
It’s not fun to discover a leaking roof or windows in the middle of a thunderstorm. Some problems are unforeseeable, but others can be avoided with a check up of your home.
Roof
Inspect for loose or missing shingles. Check that flashing is in good condition. Make sure tree branches are trimmed away from the roof. If there are any concerns, it is a good idea to get a roofer out to inspect before the rains start.
Gutters
Clean gutters of debris including the downspouts. Make sure there is adequate drainage, so water does not build up around foundation.
Windows
Check that all windows close securely. Inspect caulking to ensure windows are properly sealed.
Basement/Crawlspace
Look for any cracks that will allow water to get in. Use landscaping to direct water away from your home’s foundation. A sump pump may be needed if you have frequent flooding.
If water does get in your home, it needs to be addressed right away.
SERVPRO of Benicia/Martinez/Southeast Vallejo is here to help with all your drying needs.
Water Heater Leaks
8/19/2019 (Permalink)
Notice all of the damage around this leaking water heater. The leak was not discovered for months! Don' t let this be your water heater.
A leaking water heater can cause great damage to your property. The leaking water can damage the walls and floors surrounding the water heater, seep deep down into the foundation thus causing more problems in the future, and it could even lead to mold growth.
That is why it is good to prevent the leaks by regularly maintaining your water heater at least once a year. With good maintenance, a water heater can last at least a decade. So, you won't need to worry about replacing it often. But do try and keep track of that decade mark so you can get a new one when and if needed.
If you do discover that your water heater has a leak or has been leaking, we highly advise that you get the leak fixed and affected area dried right away. This will help to prevent any long term damage which will save you money and stress.
A plumber can help fix it, we can help dry it of course! As quickly and efficiently as possible!
So in conclusion, maintain your water heater. But, if there's an accident, never fear, SERVPRO is always here!

Flooded Crawlspace
2/19/2019 (Permalink)
Crawlspace flooded with smelly sewage water? Sounds like a job for SERVPRO!
This crawlspace flooded due to a broken sewage pipe. Not only did that leave a huge puddle behind, it left a very unpleasant odor that you could smell throughout the home. The owner's woke up one day and could smell the odor but had no idea where it was coming from. They hopped online and found that there is a company that can help get rid of unpleasant odors in your home, that company is SERVPRO of course! As soon as our tech arrived, and smelt the odor they could smell, he knew exactly where to look, the crawlspace. And sure enough, the cause of the odor was found. Hot Water Line Mess
2/7/2019 (Permalink)
Cotton Candy? Snow? No, that is mold!
This is a photo of our customer's crawlspace. Don't let this photo fool you. That is not snow you see down there. Look closely and you will see that it is mold. How did this happen you ask? Well, a hot water pipe line running underneath the house in the crawlspace burst which caused hot water to flood the area. Hot, steamy water in a confined area with little to no ventilation is mold's favorite environment because the moist and humid air allow mold to grow rapidly. On top of that, the home owner did not notice the pipe had burst until about a week later. An entire week was more than enough time for all this white, fuzzy mold to grow throughout the crawlspace. Our customer's insurance knew exactly who to call to mitigate this mess. SERVPRO of Benicia/Martinez/Southeast Vallejo of course! And that is exactly what we did.
Muck Out
9/25/2018 (Permalink)
This crawlspace had standing water and odors due to a broken sewage line.
Many of us do not know this but, your crawlspace needs attention too. The crawlspace is located beneath most homes and is where water pipes and sewage lines can be located.
Most people do not even know if something has leaked down there until a plumber notices it. If there is a leak down there , it could cause an unpleasant odor that will drift into your home. It can even cause mold. Then you will be in a whole other boat of problems.
So, take a peak down there here and there to make sure it is all dry. If you smell any sewage odors and can not seem to find the source, definitely look under there, you could have a sewage leak going.
If you notice water, give us a call. We know just how to get it clean and back to normal. We will pump out standing water, if any. Dig out any contaminated dirt. Treat the affected areas. Spread absorbent to soak up any moisture left behind, and last but not least, fog the entire area do help eliminate any odors coming from there.
Water Restoration

Water damage occurs due to several different sources such as a broken dishwasher hose, a washing machine overflow, a dishwasher leakage, broken/leaking pipes, flood waters, or clogged toilets for example. When you see that an area has been affected in your home or business due to any of those things, we highly recommend that you get the area treated before it begins to really damage the affected area. Water damage can cause mold, rusting of steel, rotting of wood, or even de-laminate materials. But never fear, SERVPRO is here! We will get a crew on-site to begin the water restoration immediately. The DEHU
8/2/2018 (Permalink)
Welcome back to the SERVPRO Benicia/ Martinez/SE Vallejo blog! Today we will be talking about a piece of equipment commonly used when treating water damaged areas.
Water damage can cause a large number of possible. Water intrudes into areas where it will attack materials or systems by destructive processes such as humidity, rotting of wood, mold growth, rusting of steel, de-laminating of materials such as plywood, and many others.
One piece of equipment used by SERVPRO when treating a water damaged area is a DEHU , short for Dehumidifier. Dehumidifiers reduce humidity levels, making your home less likely to produce allergens such as dust mites, mold, and mildew. When the air in your home is more humid, the A/C must do the function of cooling the air and removing moisture, which means it has to work harder. There are 3 types of DEHUs that we here at SERVPRO Benicia/ Martinez/SE Vallejo normally use.
- 2000 LGR - This is the largest DEHU used. Normally used in larger spaces such as a garages and living rooms.
- EVO LGR - A bit smaller than the 2000 LGR. Ideal for smaller spaced such as bedrooms and kitchens.
- Drizair 1200 - also known as the conventional DEHU. This DEHU does not have a heater unlike the larger ones and is commonly used in bathrooms and closets.
In the event your home is ever affected by water damage whether it be a major flood or a small leak, we have the technicians and equipment to make it Like it Never Even Happened. So remember, SERVPRO is the way to go!
Flood Basics
6/12/2018 (Permalink)
Flooding is the most common natural disaster in the United States and can happen anywhere.
WHAT: Flooding is an overflowing of water onto land that is normally dry. Flooding may happen with only a few inches of water, or it may cover a house to the rooftop.
WHEN: Flooding can occur during any season, but some areas of the country are at greater risk at certain times of the year. Coastal areas are at greater risk for flooding during hurricane season (i.e., June to November), while the Midwest is more at risk in the spring and during heavy summer rains. Ice jams occur in the spring in the Northeast and Northwest. Even the deserts of the Southwest are at risk during the late summer monsoon season.
WHERE: Flooding can happen in any U.S. state or territory. It is particularly important to be prepared for flooding if you live in a low-lying area near a body of water, such as a river, stream, or culvert; along a coast; or downstream from a dam or levee.
HOW: Flooding can occur in several ways, including the following.
- Rivers and lakes cannot contain excessive rain or snowmelt.
- Excessive rain or snowmelt cannot be fully absorbed into the ground.
- Waterways are blocked with debris or ice and overflow.
- Water containment systems break, such as levees, dams, or water or sewer
systems.
- Strong winds from tropical storms or hurricanes cause a storm surge by pushing
seawater onto land.
The speed and duration of flooding can vary significantly.
- Flooding can occur slowly as rain continues to fall for many days. This type of flooding, sometimes called a slow-onset flood, can take a week to develop and can last for months before floodwaters recede.
- Rapid-onset floods occur more quickly, typically developing within hours or days. These types of floods usually occur in smaller watersheds experiencing heavy rainfall, particularly in mountainous and urban areas, and the water usually recedes within a few days.
- Some rapid-onset floods known as flash floods occur very quickly with little or no warning, such as during periods of extremely heavy rain or when levees, dams, ice jams, or water systems break. Densely populated areas are at a high risk for flash floods. In urban areas, flash floods can fill underpasses, viaducts, parking structures, low roads, and basements.
- The strong winds of a tropical cyclone or hurricane can push large amounts of seawater up onto the land, causing a storm surge. A storm surge combines with the ocean’s tide to produce a storm-tide surge. Storm-tide surges have been registered as high as almost 35 feet above normal sea level and can cause significant flooding across a large area. This generally occurs over a short period, typically, 4 to 8 hours, but in some areas, it can take much longer for the water to recede to its pre-storm level.
IMPACT: The physical destruction caused by flooding depends on the speed and level of the water, the duration of the flood, terrain and soil conditions, and the built environment (e.g., buildings, roads, and bridges).
- Flooding can cause fatalities and serious injuries for people who are trapped or swept away by wading in, driving through, or boating across floodwaters.
- Transportation routes, power, water, gas, and other services may be disrupted.
- Commercial supplies and government support systems may be temporarily unavailable.
- Drinking water supplies and wells may become polluted.
- Floodwaters can cause erosion, which can damage roads, bridge structures, levees, and buildings with weak foundations, causing their collapse without warning. The floodwaters may carry the worn-away mud, rocks, and other sediment.
- Landslides and mudslides can occur.
- Even a few inches of floodwater in a home can cause tens of thousands of dollarsin damage.
